There are a rapidly growing number and diversity of sequenced genomes across the evolutionary spectrum enabling a systematic study. This makes it possible to use these methods combined with biological insight to identify meaningful features and patterns to reveal relationships among DNA sequences that are not just limited to specific 16S rRNA genes but to any random fragment.
